NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME – NSS

The University supports the NSS and encourages all the youth to join the program. The vision of the scheme is to inculcate values of compassion and humanity and feelings for fellow persons.

The combined participation in community service leads to a sense of involvement in the task of nation building. The motto 'NOT ME, BUT YOU' underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole.

The NSS attempts to develop in the young students a sense of social and civic responsibility and trains them to utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.

The HR-NSS unit has been trying through its various activities to do community service, bring about changes in the society, and help the volunteers build their personalities in the process.

Beach Clean-Up at Bandra

May 18, 2024

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College participated in a beach cleanup at Chimbai Beach, Bandra, in collaboration with Project Mumbai as part of the “Swachhta Bharat Abhiyan.” The event ran from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM, with staff guiding six volunteers (all female) in collecting around 5 bags (10 kg) of waste, including plastic bottles and debris. This initiative highlights our commitment to environmental conservation and community service, encouraging everyone to contribute to a cleaner community.

Beach Clean-Up at Andheri

May 19, 2024

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College participated in a beach cleanup at Versova Beach, Andheri, alongside Mumbai Ploggers and Rustomjee for the “Swachhta Bharat Abhiyan.” Starting at 6:30 AM, volunteers received T-shirts and collected nearly 12 bags of waste by 9:30 AM. The event aimed to raise awareness about waste issues and environmental conservation, featuring attendees like Ms. Rashmi Singh, Mr. Sagar (Mr. Earth), and lifestyle blogger Vritti Khawani, who documented the initiative.

This initiative aimed to encourage students and faculty members to exercise their democratic rights by ensuring they were registered to vote. The drive, held on campus, saw enthusiastic participation from both students and staff, with dedicated NSS volunteers assisting in the process. Road Safety Seminar ( H. R. College)

The NSS unit of H.R. College organised a road safety seminar featuring Mr. Rohit Dalvi from United Way Mumbai as the key speaker. The seminar focused on raising awareness about the critical importance of safe driving practices, particularly for two-wheeler riders. Mr. Dalvi shared alarming statistics on road accidents and emphasised the need for wearing helmets and following traffic rules. He also highlighted the Two Wheels One Life initiative aimed at promoting two-wheeler safety. The interactive session allowed students to engage with Mr. Dalvi, asking questions and debunking common myths about road safety. The event concluded with a call to action, urging students to be road safety ambassadors. The seminar was well-received and left a lasting impact on the participants, encouraging them to take road safety seriously.

College of Commerce and Economics organised the Blood Donation Camp under the “Project Healing Hands” at Churchgate Station.Volunteers actively engaged with the public, encouraging them to donate blood for a vital cause. It was a successful demonstration of collective effort and social responsibility.

“DAKSH”– Disaster Preparedness Seminar

The “DAKSH”– Disaster Preparedness Seminar, organized by the State Disaster Management Authority at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Nariman Point, was a significant event aimed at strengthening disaster readiness within the community. Bringing together experts in disaster management, policymakers, first responders, and community leaders, the seminar provided a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices. It addressed the growing need for effective disaster preparedness, especially in urban areas prone to natural and man-made hazards. Key sessions focused on enhancing community resilience, equipping citizens with practical skills, and discussing topics like early warning systems, emergency response coordination, and post-disaster recovery strategies.

The involvement of the NSS Unit from H.R. College added a dynamic youth perspective, highlighting the importance of involving younger generations in disaster preparedness. Through interactive workshops and real-life case studies, the students learned about quick response, collaboration, and community engagement during disasters. The event concluded with a Q&A segment, where participants actively engaged and cleared their doubts, making it a vital step towards building a resilient society..

Project Khushi (Andheri)

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College is continuing its “Project Khushi ” initiative, aimed at spreading happiness and joy among children, the elderly, cancer patients, and others. Volunteers engaged the children in a fun and educational event where they celebrated India’s Independence Day through creative activities. The kids had the opportunity to make Indian flags and draw on the theme of Independence Day. Volunteers were present to guide and assist, ensuring a supportive and enjoyable experience for all. This event aimed to inspire young minds and instill a sense of patriotism while allowing them to express their creativity.

Harr Ghar Tiranga

N.S.S volunteers actively participated in the “Har Ghar Tiranga” initiative as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Each volunteer hoisted the national flag at their home and captured the moment with photographs. Additionally, they distributed flags to their neighbours, encouraging widespread participation in the campaign. This initiative fostered a strong sense of national pride and unity within the community, with N.S.S volunteers playing a key role in its success. Their efforts exemplified the N.S.S motto, “Not Me, But You,” by promoting patriotism and community involvement.

Veero ka Vandan

The N.S.S cell of HSNC University organized a heartfelt event titled “Veero ka Vandan” at the university’s Worli campus. The ceremony was especially significant as it welcomed the esteemed guests Shri Prakash Kumar Rao Rane and Mrs. Jyoti Rao Rane, the parents of Shaheed Major Kaustubh Rane. The program included speeches from the university’s faculty. The Rane family shared touching memories of Major Kaustubh Rane, inspiring everyone with his story of bravery. The event concluded with a moment of silence and a ceremonial tribute to all fallen soldiers, followed by the NSS volunteers presenting a token of respect to Shri Prakash Kumar Rao Rane and Mrs. Jyoti Rao Rane. The event ended with an Independence day Rally.

Tiranga Yatra (Marine Drive)

Brief – The N.S.S. unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, organized the ”Tiranga Yatra” rally in celebration of India’s spirit. The rally began at 12:00 p.m., with volunteers and staff marching together with the Indian flag, expressing their unity and patriotism. As volunteers chanted slogans, their enthusiasm was evident, drawing attention and spreading the patriotic pride. The event concluded with a solemn pledge, where everyone reaffirmed their commitment to the nation, making the Tiranga Yatra a successful and memorable celebration of our nation’s pride.

Independence Day

On August 15, 2024, HSNC University, Worli, celebrated Independence Day with great patriotism. The ceremony began with the flag hoisting by Honourable Vice Chancellor Dr. Hemlata Bagla, who unfurled the national flag, followed by the national anthem. A parade by NCC cadets and NSS volunteers was a highlight of the event. The cadets and volunteers marched with discipline and pride, showcasing their dedication to the nation. Dr. Bagla addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of Independence Day and encouraging students to actively contribute to the nation’s progress. The event was a solemn and inspiring tribute to India’s journey to freedom.

The N.S.S cell of HSNC University, in collaboration with the Department of Student’s Development, hosted a special session on the My Bharat Portal. Led by Dr. Pratiksha M. Kadam. Dr. Kadam provided an overview of the My Bharat Portal, highlighting its role in enhancing student engagement in national service activities. The session included a practical demonstration of the portal’s features and a discussion on how it can support NSS initiatives.The program concluded with the National Anthem, marking the end of a productive and inspiring session.

Event: Disaster Management Preparedness

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics actively participated in a Disaster Management Preparedness event, which aimed at educating volunteers on essential life-saving techniques during emergencies. The session covered crucial skills such as learning different types of knots (like the single sheet bend, figure-eight knot, etc.), which are useful in various rescue operations. Additionally, volunteers were trained on several methods to transport injured individuals safely to the hospital in times of need.The event also focused on how to respond to medical emergencies, including heart attacks and strokes, and provided practical training on performing CPR. Moreover, participants learned essential firefighting techniques to tackle fire emergencies effectively. The comprehensive training ensured that all volunteers were better equipped to handle disaster situations, ensuring safety and preparedness in times of crisis.

Event: Anti-Tobacco and Drug Abuse

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organised an Informative session on Anti-Tobacco and Drug Abuse at the Rama & Sundri Watumull Auditorium. Speakers Mr. Bosco Michael Dsouza and Mr. Vivek highlighted the physical, psychological, and social impacts of substance abuse, focusing on long-term health risks and the addictive nature of these substances. Attendees learned to recognize early warning signs of addiction, prevention strategies, and how to support those struggling. The session aimed to empower participants with the knowledge to promote healthier, drug-free lifestyles and make informed choices, contributing to a healthier society.

PAPER BAG MAKING

A paper bag-making session was conducted by the NSS volunteers of the NSS Unit of H.R. College, promoting eco-friendly practices among students. During the session, volunteers demonstrated the steps to make durable and reusable paper bags using old newspapers and other recyclable materials. This initiative aimed to reduce plastic usage on campus and raise awareness about sustainable alternatives. The activity saw active participation from students, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and teamwork.Volunteers made 165 paper bags.

Bhavishya Bharat 2024, National award festival for the social work done by the Colleges

We are proud to announce that the NSS Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics has secured the 1st Prize in the category of Best Social Initiative for Eradicating Hunger and the Second Runner-Up position for Best Social Worker of the Year, awarded to our NSS Leader, Garv Nenwani, at Bhavishya Bharat 2024. This prestigious national award festival, which saw participation from 16 states and over 70+ colleges, recognized the remarkable social work done by our unit. NSS Program Officer, Prof. Rahul Mishra, presented on the impactful social initiatives carried out by our unit, while Garv Nenwani represented for the Best Social Worker award. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Dr. Pooja Ramchandani, and Vice Principals, Dr. Rani Tyagi and Dr. Jasbir Sodhi, for their unwavering support throughout our social work journey.

Assisting Mumbai Police in Crowd Management During Anant Chaturthi

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, along with the Marine Drive Police Station, successfully organized a Crowd Management initiative on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi. With thousands of devotees thronging the streets to bid farewell to Lord Ganesha, the volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of processions and managing the large crowds at key locations, including major pandals and other high-footfall areas. The combined efforts of the volunteers and the Marine Drive Police Station not only contributed to the safety and security of the devotees but also ensured that the cultural and spiritual significance of the Ganesh Visarjan was observed with the dignity it deserves.

Beach Clean-up

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organized a Beach Clean-Up at Versova Beach, Andheri West, in collaboration with Divyaj Foundation. The clean-up, began at 6:30 a.m. and concluded at 9:30 a.m. A total of 38 volunteers participated, collecting approximately 50 kgs of waste, which included plastic waste, glass bottles, and other debris left after the Ganpati Visarjan. The event was graced by the presence of Ayushmann Khurrana, Mrs.Amrita Fadnavis (Founder of Divyaj Foundation), Hon. Bhushan Gagrani (BMC Commissioner),and Hon. Vivek Phansalkar (Mumbai Police Commissioner). The initiative aimed to restore the beach’s natural beauty while promoting environmental awareness. This successful event highlights our commitment to protecting the environment and engaging the community in impactful actions.

International Coastal Cleanup

HSNC University organized the International Coastal Cleanup at Girgaon Beach, Mumbai. Volunteers from the N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics and K.C College had participated in the event, gathering at 7:00 AM to clean the beach.Participants collected plastic and other non-biodegradable waste, contributing to a cleaner shoreline while raising awareness about marine conservation. This event highlighted the importance of collective action in environmental preservation and encouraged sustainable practices.

N.S.S Foundation Day

On 24th September, HSNC University organized a grand event to celebrate NSS Foundation Day. This day, dedicated to honoring the National Service Scheme (NSS) and its values of community service, saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and program officers from various affiliated colleges.The event began with a welcome address by the Vice-Chancellor of HSNC University, emphasizing the importance of NSS in fostering social responsibility among students. A series of inspiring speeches followed, shedding light on the achievements of NSS and encouraging students to continue their community service efforts.A highlight of the celebration was the felicitation ceremony for NSS program officers from all affiliated colleges. Each program officer was honored with a medal in recognition of their dedication and contribution to the NSS mission. The medals symbolized appreciation for their efforts in guiding students and organizing impactful community service projects.The NSS Foundation Day celebration at HSNC University was a successful and meaningful event, further inspiring students and faculty alike to commit to community service and social impact.

EYE DONATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

The NSS Unit of H.R. College conducted an eye donation seminar to highlight the importance and need for eye donations. The seminar educated students about how eye donation can restore sight for those with corneal blindness and encouraged them to spread awareness. The session inspired participants to consider pledging their eyes, emphasizing the impactful change they could bring to someone’s life.At the end the audience was asked to fill a form wherein they had to register themselves and if any person in need could ask the suitable donor if they are willing to donate willingly.

Talent Parade

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics supported the annual Talent Parade at Birla Matushri Auditorium on 28thSeptember,2024. N.S.S. volunteers assisted with event management, maintaining order and helping backstage.Volunteers checked the bags of the audience at the Entrance gate and security check was done of each and everyone. The N.S.S. team’s efforts contributed to the smooth and successful execution of the Talent Parade.

PAPER BAG MAKING

The NSS volunteers of the NSS Unit of H.R. College organized a paper bag-making session to promote environmental sustainability. Using recycled newspapers, the volunteers crafted durable paper bags, which were later distributed to local vendors as an alternative to plastic bags. This initiative not only encouraged eco-friendly practices but also supported the community by providing vendors with reusable bags. The session saw enthusiastic participation from students, fostering awareness of sustainable practices and responsible resource use.Volunteers made 150 Paper bags with Newspapers.

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organised a Flashmob in association with Western Railways on 2nd October,2024 at Mumbai Central Railway Station on account of Gandhi Jayanti. The event aimed to spread awareness about cleanliness, sanitation, and community responsibility toward a cleaner environment. This initiative drew attention from a large audience, encouraging people to join the cleanliness movement inspired by Gandhi’s ideals.

Cyclothon

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics participated in a Cyclethon organised in association with International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL), and Krisha Foundation on 19th October 2024. The event aimed to promote awareness about fitness, eco-friendly transportation, and financial literacy among the community. The route for the Cyclethon began at H.R. College, continued through Nariman Point and Sukh Sagar, and concluded back at H.R. College.

Project Khushi

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College continued its “Project Khushi” initiative, aimed at spreading happiness and joy among children, the elderly, cancer patients, and others. Volunteers celebrated Diwali with the children by engaging them in festive and creative activities. Together, they painted diyas and made colorful lanterns, bringing the spirit of the festival alive. Volunteers guided the children through each activity, ensuring a joyful experience while fostering their creativity. This event aimed to bring warmth and light to young hearts, celebrating Diwali in a meaningful way.

Omkar Event

The NSS Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics participated in the Omkar Andh KEVK Society – Gift Distribution Program which has been a source of joy and hope for many years in the lives of those who are visually impaired. Omkar Andh KEVK Society is an Organisation working for the betterment of blinds organised its 35th year of gift distribution programme of food hampers including grocery, sweets, etc. to about 3500 blinds. Starting from 9:30 a.m., the volunteers helped those who were less fortunate by guiding them during the lunch buffet, serving them food and leading them to the Ration program. Mr. Rahul Mishra motivated the volunteers who were full of gratitude and blessings after the event.

Vigilance Day Elocution Competition

This annual event aims to promote vigilance and integrity among young individuals, encouraging them to actively participate in building a transparent and accountable society. The theme of the week was “Say No to Corruption and Uphold Integrity.”The winners were awarded certificates and tokens of appreciation from The Oriental Insurance Company.The elocution competition was a successful event that inspired participants and attendees to adopt a vigilant and ethical approach in their personal and professional lives.

Traffic Management

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organized a Traffic management activity at Crawford Market, one of India’s busiest and most prominent markets along with Marine lines Traffic Police on 30th October,2024. Under the guidance of Assistant Traffic Police Sub-Inspector Firoj Mulla, the volunteers worked alongside traffic police officers to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure pedestrian safety.

Cleanliness Drive

The N.S.S. Unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organized a Cleanliness Drive at Crawford Market on 30th October,2024. The event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of maintaining clean public spaces and promoting community responsibility towards the environment. Volunteers successfully collected 6 bags of garbage.
